Kate Samways – My Journey into cycling

My journey into cycling happened to me rather late in life. Due partly to my belief that I wasn’t sporty, I was never picked for school sports teams. I always dreaded the annual School Sports Day, which was never an occasion to expect, or believe that I could achieve or win.

My passion is to inspire, motivate and promote cycling events for all, especially women and girls.

I had trained as an Architect, and married the owner of a bike store. Having given up Architecture to fully concentrate on bringing up our two daughters, I found my role within the cycle business increasing over a number of years, when my girls started school.

Fascinated and astonished , by the fact that cycling was so male dominated, I established a Women’s Department in our store, which sold bikes, clothing and accessories that were designed specifically for women. A friend and colleague, then encouraged me to ride a road bike and for the first time I began to enjoy exercise and loved all the benefits that happen, as a result of cycling.

Samways Cycling Club was established May 2015 and we developed the Club which now has a membership of over ninety, with more wishing to join. The Club has a huge female membership and the most wonderful community of people, many who have become great friends. I organised ride outs, sessions at the Derby Arena Velodrome, social events including Award Nights.

We have women only ride outs which are great fun, social and inclusive. Everyone is made welcome and we ride at a pace where we can chat and enjoy the stunning Derbyshire countryside. Coffee and cake are always on the agenda. It is a great opportunity to discuss everyone’s particular cycling journey and influences. It is a brilliant chance to establish what is important and what are the goals, of the women and girls, who have joined us.

Listening, understanding and refining sessions with coaches, has not only given me an insight into the world of coaching but enabled me to see how coaches may be encouraged and supported, to deliver coaching to the highest standard. For me, it is important to liaise with those that are being coached. To use and combine this information with the coaches feedback, has led me to deliver sessions, that are required, needed and enjoyed.

I have recently been accepted onto the British Cycling Level 2 Coaching Course which I believe will be a fabulous experience for me. I know this will further increase my knowledge of coaching, and the issues that will need to be examined, to improve and evaluate coaching for now and the future.

In March this year, the demand was so great for the events that I had been organising, that I took the big decision to establish – SAMWAYS . This events Management business specialises in organising cycling events for women and girls. It aims breaks down barriers, to make cycling more accessible and inclusive for all. My sessions are designed to empower, increase confidence and knowledge. When you deliver such sessions, it is a great and rewarding experience.

This June, I became a Breeze Champion and really enjoy leading ride outs that are social and fun for the women who attend. Cake and coffee are always on the agenda, with the focus on community and friendship. Nobody, ever gets dropped or left behind. My goal is to make cycling accessible for all, to breakdown barriers and to create inclusive, supportive environments that are empowering for women.
Having been chosen as a mentor to work on the “Ignite Your Coaching” British Cycling programme, I am working very closely with Jo, a British Cycling Coach. This has, and is, a fascinating and rewarding experience for me, as it is so wonderful to use my knowledge and skills to assist Jo in her coaching and vice averse. We are working extremely well together, running women’s road bike skill sessions at Harvey Hadden Sports Village, Closed Road circuit.

We are looking to expand our coaching projects and had our first coach led sessions for adults which will encourage more cyclists to be confident and knowledgable, when riding on the roads. Ignite Your Road Cycling Safety Skills, is an informal coached session designed around the goals and concerns of those participating. It is often a huge concern for women to ride on the roads and often they are lacking in confidence. To increase their knowledge and confidence will be extremely beneficial too them and may encourage them to commute to work of entry a sportive.
In order to further my career in the world of cycling, I like to attend seminars, courses and cycling events, to continue my professional development. This will range from seminars with Women In Sport, watching The Tour of Britain and attending The Women’s Tour and Revolution at Derby Arena as well as liaising with sporting venues and organisations to promote cycling for women. I always take photographs, which serve as a fabulous visual tool, to inform and inspire, through social media sites including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

I have many plans for 2017, and I feel lucky to have found a job that I really enjoy. It is so rewarding, encouraging others to succeed, to believe in themselves and watching the huge smiles on their faces when they achieve.

If you wish to begin your cycling journey, look for a friendly club, or Breeze ride to join, commit to a plan, be it to improve your fitness, or meet new friends. What ever your goals are make sure they are achievable and make sure they are enjoyable.
