QMU Netball Support Women’s Sport Wednesdays

Queen Margaret University Netball Club President, Georgia Cunningham, blogs about her club’s recent fundraising efforts to help transform sport for the benefit of every woman and girl in the UK.

We first heard about Women in Sport because of Women in Sport Week 2016! We thought by getting involved, it would be the perfect opportunity to showcase the charity and the beginning of Women Sport Wednesdays.

As a predominately female university, Women in Sport’s mission as a charity is something that is very relevant to us and we were very keen to do our bit…and we hope to continue to do so!

We approached our Student Union Vice President and told her our plans to get all our club members dressed in purple and donating their spare change to Women in Sport. But then, we decided to go one better and encourage not just our team but all of the other teams across the university to get involved.

We put our idea out across social media and spoke to the other team captains to try and create as much hype as possible.

At our Tuesday night training session, QMU Netball managed to raise £25 for Women in Sport and all 50 members turned up with at least one item of purple clothing. We even had some people in full purple outfits – including purple trainers!

Throughout the week we received lots of photos of other teams getting involved and wearing purple to training, which was a fantastic way to raise awareness of Women in Sport and is something we hope to run every year.

We were really encouraged by the support and praise we received from Women in Sport and even managed to get ourselves featured in their news!

From all at QMU netball – thank you for your help and we look forward to running lots more events.

If you’d like to follow the example of Georgia and her teammates at Queen Margaret University, then you can! Women’s Sport Wednesdays is a fundraising campaign encouraging the nation to come together to play sport and raise money to help women and girls reach their full potential through sport.

You can organise your activity to take place on any Wednesday throughout the year. However, if Wednesday doesn’t work for you then don’t worry – you can hold your activity on any day of the week and use Wednesdays to help promote what you’re doing.
