The Rugby Football Union (RFU) has done a lot to support women’s rugby in recent years by investing at both a grassroots and elite level. However, we are disappointed to learn that the RFU will not be renewing the women’s rugby XVs team contract after the World Cup.
Women’s sport in the UK needs sustained investment to ensure women continue to win tournaments. A stop start approach to funding puts women at a disadvantage. We want to see female rugby players treated the same as their male counterparts. This means more continuity and consistency in terms of funding. Elite female rugby players need to be employed on a long term, full time basis to truly professionalise and achieve parity with men.
We wish the women’s rugby team every success as they start the defence of their World Cup title on 9 August.
