Women in Sport’s response to sexism allegations at British Cycling being upheld

At Women in Sport, we’re pleased that the board at British Cycling has today upheld Jess Varnish’s complaints about sexist comments made against her by former technical director Shane Sutton, but we remain far from satisfied that this was an isolated incident.

It is disappointing that a governing body like British Cycling, one whose sportswomen achieved so much success for their country in Rio this year, should be dealing with such sexist attitudes within its ranks.

It is not enough to uphold Jess’s complaint and for the culprit to move on if the culture does not, and this could be indicative of an underlying sexist and outdated culture. Following this outcome, we await with interest the conclusions of UK Sport’s investigation into the culture at British Cycling in the coming weeks.
