Women in Sport’s response to Sport England’s Active Lives Adult Survey 2018-19

April 2020

We are pleased to see that more women are active in England compared to 12 months ago, with a total of 14.2 million now doing at least 150 minutes of activity a week. This lift is a result of the hard work of many organisations in the sector.

However, we cannot be complacent. The data shows us that men are still more likely to be active than women, while there are also more inactive women in England than men.

Not all women in society are experiencing the huge benefits of physical activity. Women of mixed ethnicity have seen a statistically significant decrease in their activity levels (down 6.2% in the last year). Less than half of Asian women are doing the recommended level of activity and just 53% of black women are meeting activity guidelines.

Through programmes like Daughters and Dads Active Empowered we are aiming to tackle these inactivity levels, challenge genders stereotypes and help women and girls across the UK experience the lifelong rewards of sport.
