Girls Active Awards 2019 Live Launch

Girls from across more than 300 primary and secondary schools in England will have the chance to be recognised for their work to inspire more girls in their school to get active, through the 2019 Girls Active Awards.

The Awards, now in their third year, are a celebration of the work girls 8 to 18-year-olds are leading, to get their peers more active and enjoying PE and physical activity in their school. Teachers, parents and the girls themselves are able to nominate those individuals or groups that meet one of the five award categories celebrating the work done through the YST Girls Active programme.

Girls Active is developed by the Youth Sport Trust, and is delivered in partnership with Women in Sport, and This Girl Can; it is funded through Sport England National Lottery. The programme involves girls in the design and delivery of PE, physical activity and school sport in primary and secondary schools.

Nominations are now live and there are five categories this year:

Leader

Influencer

Personal Growth

Best Squad

Future Leader (primary school category)

The Awards are open to girls who have been involved in the YST Girls Active programme over the 2018-19 school year. Each nominee must meet at least one of the category criteria to be in with a chance to win.

Ali Oliver, Chief Executive of the Youth Sport Trust, said:

“The Girls Active Awards are an important part of the journey for the girls through the programme, they allow them to reflect on and celebrate their own personal experiences and the impact of their work.

“Girls Active is as much about getting young people active as it is about harnessing young people’s talents and encouraging them to make a difference to others both in and through sport. Our research around barriers to girls participating in physical activity and sport tells us that one of the best ways to engage girls is through encouragement from their peers – and that is exactly what Girls Active is about.

“To date, the Awards have offered winners some incredible sporting experiences and opportunities as prizes and we look forward to celebrating this years’ successful young women.”

Ruth Holdaway, Chief Executive of Women in Sport, said:

“We are delighted to be working with the Youth Sport Trust to deliver the Girls Active Awards 2019. The Awards are a celebration of the inspiring work that girls in primary and secondary schools across the country are leading.

I was a judge last year and the standard of nominations was so high it was difficult to pick only one winner in each category! We learned how girls’ themselves had been empowered by sport and how they went on to engage, encourage and support others. The Awards gives the girls an opportunity to reflect on their progress and that of their peers, an important part of the programme.  The Girls Active Awards recognises the hard work girls put in and creates a joyful end to the academic year.“

Nominations are open until Friday 28th June or via post by Monday 1st July 2019.

The shortlist will be announced this summer with an awards event in London in October.
